Time has nearly run out for the New York City Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers to come to a resolution on the teacher evaluation law adopted in 2010.

With only a week left, NYCAN joined a coalition of ten other reform organizations to urge Education Commisioner John King to implement a comprehensive evaluation system with the following elements if the state must intervene:

  • a concise evaluation rubric
  • student surveys
  • a manageable administrative burden
  • fair, efficient appeals process.

We believe this is a chance to ensure that the evaluation imposed embodies the intent of the 2010 state law and provides New York City’s teachers with the feedback they deserve as professionals.
