Big news: earlier this week, Governor Cuomo announced the launch of the NYS Community Schools Initiative, an important piece of the first report issued by the New NY State Education Reform commission. Aimed at providing students with holistic support to help them succeed in school, it empowers schools and local community groups to partner together in offering kids services like health care, counseling, job training and tutoring.

To fund this new program, Governor Cuomo created a grant program in the 2013 budget that will give up to 30 schools $500,000 over three years.

The Governor also directed state agencies on Monday to support the new initiative by prioritizing schools and their community partners for health and social service grants and programs.  Combining existing resources with the new funding stream will help maximize the initiative’s impact.

Applications for community schools grants are due to department of education by September 19th, and grants will be awarded this fall.
