Beth Milne is a past member of the 50CAN team.

In case you missed it in EdWeek, 50CAN joined forces with nearly 50 education groups nationwide to urge Senate leaders to set aside 25 percent of Title II-A funds (a.k.a. Effective Teachers and Leaders State Grants) for competitive grants. Right now only 1.5 percent of those grants are competitive.

Educators have a huge impact on what students learn, so we need to invest in the resources and training that will help them become the very best. We need creative ways to attract, develop and keep top-talent in classrooms and schools across the country. If enacted as part of the FY-2013 budget, this competitive funding would help states cultivate formidable teacher and principal workforces by supporting projects such as:

  • Preparation for new STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teachers
  • Improvements to teacher and principal preparation programs, including accountability systems
  • Expanding pathways for highly qualified individuals to get to the classroom (e.g., Teach for America)

You can read the full letter here. We’ll be monitoring the Senate’s response closely and reporting back here on GreatBigBlog, so stay tuned!
