2025 Math and Data Science Fellow
Jason Lee Morgan
Founder and CEO of twiGs Creation, Inc., Curriculum Specialist, Compton Unified School District

South Central Los Angeles native, Christian, Husband, Father of three, and Founder/CEO of twiGs Creation, Inc., Jason Lee Morgan, was a “bussed kid,” and lived firsthand the inequities of our school system having to travel an hour outside of his community on a bus each day to receive a quality education. His unique experience with public schools and systemic injustice trauma growing up as a young Black male has empowered him to champion culturally relevant, engaging, and equitable learning experiences for all families who stay in their local district and to elevate the unique assets that exist in the culture and people of communities of color.

Upon graduation from Stanford University, Jason became a teacher in “a community like his.” He has served the great community of Compton Unified as a Mathematics, Data Science, and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher, Curriculum Designer, Coordinator, and Specialist for the past 19 years. Jason founded a design thinking hub at his school site to empower grassroots teams through creative & collaborative problem solving for unique school community challenges. Additionally, as a specialist Jason supported various on-campus career-connected learning partnerships with organizations such as NAF, JASoCal, and 3DE. He also works as a contract consultant for the College and Career Readiness Unit of the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

Jason is a national DoD STEM ambassador sponsored by the TGR Foundation (Tiger Woods Foundation) where he has presented on STEM partnerships at the National Science Teacher Association National Conference. Some of his most proud student-immersive STEM partner experiences he’s helped to liaise were “Ortho Day” with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the CNSF “Pathways to Neurosurgery” at the Congress of Neurological Sciences Annual Convening at the LA Convention Center. He is a TGR Foundation STEM Studio Educator and was a featured speaker in the webinar, “Data Science on the Move,” in collaboration with Databot.usa. Jason speaks on and leads impact projects for STEM engagement with underrepresented populations with organizations like the Long Beach Math Collaborative, CSULB Upward Bound Math & Science Program, Building College Success, and more!

Jason established the first Data Science course in Compton Unified in partnership with Stanford’s Youcubed math-based non-profit. He was a keynote speaker at DataConLA ‘24 presenting on “Educational Redlining: The Most Critical Challenge in Data Science.” He was invited to contribute his expertise in the classroom at the “Modernizing High School Math for Relevance and Readiness“ panel for the Linked Learning Alliance Conference. Based on his life work in STEM education in marginalized communities Mr. Morgan founded the twiGs Math Equity I Too, Am a Mathematician Project in 2023 to increase access to enjoyable, equitable, and empowering mathematical/STEM achievement and identities for students of color and beyond in Compton, Long Beach, and South Central LA. He is the Founder-CEO of twiGs Creation, Inc. an educational services and media entity.

Jason is an active proponent of the expansion of Data Science in K-12 education serving as a member of the Expanded Math Pathways Champions Coalition recently serving as an expert panelist for “Revitalizing High School Math for Real-life Relevance” in “The Mathematics of Opportunity: Beyond Limits” conference hosted by Just Equations. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics where he serves as program planning committee member for the 2026 Spring NCTM Nola Conference, “Rhythm, Roots, & Reasoning: Cultivating Joie de Vivre in Mathematics.”

He advocates within the broader educational landscape as a Presenter and Early Career Teacher Mentor with the Above and Beyond Teacher Leadership Academy and as an Education Policy Educator Advisor with Teach Plus, Ed-Trust West, CA Educator Diversity Action Network, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Mr. Morgan has spoken and written on various topics on educational equity on platforms such as the Annenberg Learner podcast, the Courageous Conversations About Our Schools podcast, CSULB PACEing your Future podcast, In The Teacher’s Lounge Podcast, the Center to Close the Opportunity Gap Educators Summit, and co-authored the EdSource article entitled “Data Science helps students of color opt in for more math,” with California State University, Long Beach professor of Mathematics and Statistics, Dr. Kagba Suaray. Jason’s article entitled “Data Science: A student’s tool for understanding, advocacy, and systematic change,” was published by Getting Smart.

He has been honored as a $20K Grant recipient and LA Legacy Champion Educator (CFP/LA84/LASEC Foundation), Outstanding Teacher of America (Above and Beyond CA), American Graduate Champion (American Graduate, PBS Socal), Compton Teacher of the Year, and CA League of Schools Regional Educator of the Year. Mr. Morgan holds a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction Research and Design, conducting research on the integration of movement-based pedagogies for culturally, linguistically, and ability responsive instruction and mathematics education.

Jason is an Advisory Board member and consultant for the Hidden Genius Project, Long Beach, Courageous Conversations About Our Schools, and the Long Beach Unified/California State University, Long Beach Math Collaborative. He is a member of UCLA’s Center X, Computer Science Equity for School Leaders community which aims to democratize K-12 Computer Science Education both at the state and local level.

His other interests include hiking, embodied cognition theory, the arts, and expanding financial literacy for first generation wealth builders. Jason dives deeper into these passions by directing the Student Empathy Network for Diversity (SEND) Student Ambassador fellowship which seeks to bridge the empathy-gap between segregated high school youth and their families through Food, Arts, and Movement to promote Intercultural Exchange, Leadership & Service, and Youth Development. His work was honored with a grant from the ProHuman Foundation and featured by the Listen First Project’s National Week of Conversation. SEND is now a member of a national Bridging Movement called the Listen First Coalition. Jason has also partnered with entities like Intuit for Education, EverFi, IBM, and Kevin Love Fund to bring schoolwide curriculum, resources, and badging to high school students in the areas of financial literacy and mental wellness.
