With over 21 years of experience homeschooling her six children, and as the Co-Founder and Director of eXtend Homeschool Tutorial in Bowie, Maryland, Kym Kent, a compassionate, cheerleading connector, has emerged as a leader in championing homeschooling and educational freedom for families, and empowering non-traditional educational entrepreneurs to build programs to meet the needs of students and families in their communities. She is also a self-proclaimed “Homeschool Mythbuster” using every opportunity to shatter the many myths surrounding homeschooling and elevate the stories of families and educational communities who are successfully educating children outside of the traditional model.
A native of Queens, New York, Kym Kent is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park, with a degree in Economics, and previously worked as a paralegal in Special Education litigation. However, her real education began in 2003 with the start of her family’s homeschooling journey. While participating in classical Christian homeschool tutorials, she taught elementary, middle and high school math, and is now well known for her high-energy Math classes, where she helps her students enjoy math while preparing and challenging them for high-level studies.
Kym is the Co-Founder and Director of eXtend Homeschool Tutorial, which began in 2017 as Bridge Elementary Tutorial Homeschool Ministries, and provides affordable a la carte core academic and elective classes to elementary, middle, and high school homeschooled students in suburban Maryland and the surrounding D.C. Metropolitan area. eXtend’s program has touched countless families and has been used as a model to successfully launch other non-traditional environments not only in Maryland, but in other states as well. Through the years, Kym’s passion for homeschooling and unconventional educational environments has enabled her to mentor, support, and encourage countless students and families, as well as fellow edupreneurs, through local and national workshops and conventions. Through her work at eXtend, especially homeschooling through high school, Kym has had the opportunity to consult on books and articles covering the many facets of homeschooling, and she has been featured on Cato Institute’s Founders Friday series, as well as the LiberatED Podcast with Kerry McDonald. Kym has spoken at SXSW-EDU, Stand Together Trust’s Summit, VELACon, and is a familiar face at the nationwide HomeschoolYoKids Expos. Finally, Kym is a VELA Education Fund Community Connector in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, where she connects, equips, mentors, and serves area non-traditional educational entrepreneurs and the families they support.
While Kym relishes every opportunity to encourage and support homeschoolers and edupreneurs wherever she meets them, her greatest joy is found in the time she spends loving and cheerleading her family.
