Louisiana Kids Matter Campaign
Michelle Braud
Deputy Director

Michelle was born and raised in Louisiana and immersed in its culture of festivals, foods, and family. During and after high school, Michelle worked as a caretaker for children, and worked in the accounting and shipping departments in the chemical industry. Later, Michelle married and stayed home to raise her two children, one with a learning disability. During this time she volunteered and belonged to organizations to help those in need in her community.

Michelle always had a love of learning and aspiration to become an educator, so once her own children started school, she pursued a degree in elementary education, taking a detour to earn a cosmetology license and work in the beauty industry. After graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University, Michelle began her teaching career. Early on, she realized she needed to learn more about how to help her struggling students, so began working on her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction as a Reading Specialist.

During her 25 year career, she has taught all subjects in grades 1-5 and has implemented special programs, courses, committees to ensure students’ needs were being met and they received the skills and knowledge to not only become life-long learners, but also to love learning. She has also served as a liaison between teachers and administrations, as a teacher coach and mentor teacher in under-performing schools. She continued volunteer work, most recently providing meals for the local homeless shelter. Before joining 50CAN, she worked as a consultant for the Louisiana Kids Matter Campaign to implement a high dosage tutoring grant awarded by Accelerate. Michelle has worked in a variety of industries with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences and looks forward to continuing to support them in achieving their goals.

More about Michelle Braud
I aspire to be like the person God created me to be. Here's why:

I aspire to be the person God created me to be! I believe we are all given unique gifts in order to achieve our purpose in life. This purpose for me is to do what I can to help those in need, and do it with humility, love, and respect!

Why I love my job:

I enjoy collaboration around innovative ideas and being part of the process as they come to life, especially in education! Working to support legislation and leaders in education to provide the best education and opportunities for students in Louisiana and nationwide is essential for the success of young people today. I am excited of the possibility of impacting students on a much larger scale and in ways that will improve education for all.

My connection to public schools:

All of my education has been in public schools and all of my teaching career was in public schools. My children attended public schools for most of their education. The time they spent in private school was due to inadequate education offered in public schools in our district. Through my experiences as a teacher and my implementation work I have witnessed the disparity between schools even in the same districts. It is a desire of mine for public schools to offer quality education for all and for students to have an opportunity to pursue their goals in the environment that best suits their needs for a successful future.

What I’m bad at:

I'm bad at sports! This wouldn't be a big deal except that I am super competitive, so if I do participate, I have to win! And I will make you play until I do!

The image that represents why I work at 50CAN:

I chose this image because it will take working together to support each other and ultimately change the world, so that whatever the world offers is within grasp of all.
