Dr. Christine M. T. Pitts

Dr. Christine M. T. Pitts serves as the director of impact and communications at the Center on Reinventing Public Education, where she oversees policy leadership, partnerships and external affairs.

Christine began her teaching career as an Americorps volunteer, third-grade teacher, and reading specialist in Eastern North Carolina. After experiencing the fragmentation of assessment and accountability in her classroom and then studying education governance during her graduate degrees, her teaching career came full circle when she took a role advocating for better state assessments at NWEA.

Christine also served in multiple roles working with research think-tanks and state agencies in Oregon to analyze and advance equitable state policies and governance reforms. During the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic and school closures, Christine returned to the field to lead research and evaluation for Portland Public Schools. Her academic research, focusing on accountability, governance and social networks, can
be found in Educational Researcher and Teachers College Record.

An active community member, Christine serves as board president for Portland Backpack, a non-profit serving weekend food sacks to Portland children, a board director at the League of Minority Voters and a board officer at the Open School East, an innovative high school in Portland, Oregon. She is also an alumnus of the Public Policy Research Academy at the American Enterprise Institute, the Emerging Education Policy Scholars program at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and the PIE Network Leadership fellowship.

Christine attended East Carolina University and earned a BS in elementary education and M.Ed in reading education. She then earned a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership at the University of Oregon. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, Marshall, and their four children Marielle (12), Ira (10), Alden (7) and Magdlane (3).
