Thanks to you, Bernie’s school is safe—for now. After acknowledging the flood of emails from supporters like you, the Anne Arundel County School Board voted last Wednesday to renew Chesapeake Science Point’s charter for the next three years.

The bad news is the board also recommended conditions on the renewal that would severely restrict CSP’s ability to innovate and give its students the best education possible. CSP and the school board are still negotiating those provisions, but we’ll have word on the final deal by next month.

The fact that CSP nearly shut down is the symptom of a larger problem. As a board member pointed out, our charter law is one of the worst in the country.  So bad that it makes the renewal process unclear and difficult to navigate, which makes closure a serious risk for even great schools like CSP.

So while we won the battle to keep CSP open, we’re still fighting the war to change Maryland’s charter law so that no great school in Maryland has to struggle to keep its doors open. And we won’t win without your continuing support.

Thanks again and let’s continue standing together for great schools for all Maryland kids.
